Types of COVID-19 Tests & Patient Information

Whether you believe you were exposed to infection, are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, or have other reasons for seeking a COVID-19 test, we at ER of Texas understand that you likely have many concerns and questions. Information on the novel coronavirus is continuously coming to light, and we are committed to providing you with the most up-to-date resources and advanced testing available.

There are two basic types of COVID-19 tests:

  • Viral Tests: These are used to determine if a patient is currently infected with COVID-19
  • Antibody Tests: These are used to determine if a patient may have been previously infected

Viral COVID-19 Tests

There are two types of viral tests:

  • Molecular Tests (PCR): This is the most frequently recommended viral test for COVID-19. These tests identify viral genetic material which indicates infection. Mucus samples are collected (swabbed) from the nose or throat and sent for lab testing and analysis. PCR tests are highly accurate, but test results may take anywhere from 2 to 3 or up to 10 days.
  • Antigen Tests: Antigen tests are also referred to as rapid tests, as they provide results in as little as 15 minutes or less. These tests identify specific viral antigens, which indicate that the patient is currently infected with COVID-19. Tests are conducted via analysis of a mucus sample (obtained via nasal swab) and are considered very accurate. According to the manufacturer, antigen tests are 98.6% accurate if positive and >94.7% accurate if negative.

What Is the Antibody Test for COVID-19?

The antibody test, as mentioned above, is used to determine whether a patient may have previously been infected with COVID-19. The test involves analyzing the patient’s blood for the presence of antibodies, which may indicate past infection of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus. It is important that antibody tests are not conducted too early; it can take a matter of one to two weeks after infection for the body’s immune system to produce antibodies. Testing too early can result in a false negative.

The antibody test is conducted via a blood draw, meaning your blood will be taken and sent to our on-site lab for analysis. In most cases, results are provided within one to two days, though they may occasionally take longer.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

COVID-19 symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 to 14 days after exposure. While those infected have reported a wide range of symptoms, some common COVID-19 symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Fever/chills
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of smell/taste
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Additionally, emergency warning signs of COVID-19 include:

  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Chest pains
  • Pressure in the chest
  • Bluish hue to lips or face
  • Confusion
  • Inability to awaken/rouse

If you or anyone else is exhibiting any of the above emergency warning signs, call 911. For all other concerning symptoms, contact your medical provider or seek emergency care.

Should I get tested for COVID-19 if I was around someone who had it?

If you were around someone who tested positive for COVID-19, the CDC recommends that you self-quarantine. The CDC defines being in “close contact” with another person as being “within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more.” Other forms of close contact include direct physical contact, sharing utensils used for eating or drinking, providing care, or being coughed or sneezed on by someone infected with COVID-19.

The best thing to do after coming into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 is to stay home for a period of 14 days and avoid all contact with others, including those who also reside in your home (if possible). You may wish to be tested for COVID-19 if you believe you were exposed but are not showing symptoms or must leave your home within the next 14 days (this is not recommended). We ask that you let us know if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms prior to coming to one of our facilities for testing or for any other services.

Do I have to make an appointment for COVID-19 testing?

No, you do not need to make an appointment.
